A Difference In The World: Welcome to Gigas Aranji Highschool

2007. The discovery of those with "Special abilities", Namely genetic mutations that give them abilities that other humans are lacking. Abilties that allow them to, at length, break the laws of physics. Humans like these are, shall we say, ostracized by the general majority, though that's being kind about it. These abilities are awakened usually from birth, but don't become active until about 14. Once the abilties are recognized,they are sent to special schools around the world, designed specifically to inhabit such abominations,as most would put it.

2014. The amount of humans with special abilties has grown proportionately,so much so that they make up about a tenth of the world's population. They still remain unaccepted by the world,and are subjugated daily. This particular story takes place on Continent Lykoris, Orokos City, In the Gigas Aranji Highschool for the Gifted.

He stumbled into his house, dropping his duffel bag of supplies near the door. The last criminal he had taken in should've covered his rent for this month. Flinging his shoes off,he fumbled into the kitchen, grabbing a soda, then up the stairs in the darkness,turning the corner into his room. Collapsing on the bed, he immersed himself in his thoughts. Getting more and more difficult to keep this up. Not one to complain, but where's my break? He sighed and turned over, face-to-face with his alarm clock right as it went off,blaring in his face. Great. 10 minutes after he'd arrived home after being out chasing lowlife scum all night,and now it's time for school. Glorious.

He yawned and stretched,rising from his bed and throwing on a clean set of his usual attire: A baggy black jacket with a drab-green tie, dark blue jeans and grunge trainers. Snatching his headphones from his nightstand, he made his way to the bathroom,spraying himself with a canister of deodorant, then walking down to the kitchen. He grabbed a hotpocket from the freezer, quickly warming it and devouring it. With a sigh,he grabbed his backpack, walking out onto his front porch. He stood there for a little less than a minute,before the ground around him gave a slight shake,and his body flickered from the visible spectrum.

He dashed through the streets, all life a blur. Running at near 300 mph,he reached the school in a little under 30 seconds, though he had to stay focused the entire time, lest he slam into something and become nothing more than a carbon stain on the walls of this putrid city. He slowed himself as he neared the schoolgrounds, though not nearly enough,as he came stumbling into the visible spectrum outside the front of the grounds,a loud boom resounding and a small trail of fire following his feet. Ignoring the angered glances of his schoolmates from the annoying blast of the sonic boom so early in the morning,he stopped by a window,looking at his reflection. His hair was windblown to hell,his clothes wrinkled. Perfect. Just the way he liked them. He strode into the school.

He walked into the lobby, his headphones around his neck,blaring music of Trivium fame. Adopting his usual semi-slouch,he walked through the lobby, mumbling lyrics, before something caugh his eye. Out of the corner of his peripherae, he saw a girl kneeling down infront of a pile of what her presumed were her papers. He vaguely recognized her, and though he'd never spoken to her, he felt compelled to commit to the action he was about to perform. With a sigh,he set his backpack against the wall,standing motionless for about 2 seconds before blinking out of visibility,a strong wind blowing through the hall for a moment. He quickly snatched up the loose sheaf of papers on the ground,slowing himself and blinking back into the visible spectrum of human eyes behind her. He'd tap her on the shoulder,arm extended, holding out her papers. With a slightly monotonous voice, he spoke. "Here. These are yours."

He blinked twice. She was so... small. And he could've sworn he heard her purr. Even in a world of those with such abilities as his, he couldn't stop being suprised. Shaking his silence off, he nodded. "Eh... I'm sure no one was looking." Scratching the back of his head, he glanced at the ground, then strode over the the wall,picking up his backpack and slinging it over his shoulder. Glancing back at her, he shook his head, making his way down the hall. He stopped by the water fountain, placing a hand against the wall and leaning on it. Something strange had just happened. His mind had clouded. He felt like something was taken from him. With a sigh,he leaned over and took a drink from the fountain, jerking up when he felt a stickiness against the hand he had on the wall. Through his lack of focus,it had ignited in a blaze of fire as black as pitch, and had scorched the wall, not only leaving a charred handprint,but melting some paint onto his hand. He slammed his head agianst the wall,tempted to punch something. No one ever said being different was easy.

He had scrubbed the paint off of his hand in the bathroom as best he could, scowling when a little would not come off. With resignation,he exited the bathroom and walked down the hall, turning the corner and entering the classroom. Enhanced Kinesis 2, taught by perhaps the most disturbed person on the planet, a hematokinetic by the name of Mr. Karamin. Anyone who draws their own blood,then manipulates it with their mind is certainly strange, he thought. Walking through the crowd, he took a seat near the back corner. In the back of his mind, he vaguely wondered whether or not that girl would be in here. He never paid attention much,which explained his lack of control over his kinetic powers, though through self-practice he was getting better. But he didn't even know the girl's abilties, other than her purring. With a sigh, he set himself to practicing, snapping the fingers of his right hand,a flaring,unstable ball of black flame materializing in his palm. He aimed the palm of his left hand at the flame,a bolt of red electricity shooting into it. Carefully,he forced a stream of electricty through his right hand, causing the ball of fire to float between his hands,suspended by the electricity. Satisfied with himself,he let it dissipate, as class was about to begin.

He glanced up from the book he held between his hands, Things Not Seen, which was, while an interesting book, being used for nothing more than a cover for him to sleep behind. The bell rang, and right on cue, Mr. Karamin came into the class, hair jutting out in straight, wispy gray spikes from his head, pale as all hell. Draining blood for the sake of education would do that,Nero figured. He sighed and set the book down,listening to the shrill voice of the deranged man.

"Today, as per my lesson plan, each child will come up and demonstrate their control over their kinetic abilities." Shrilled the man. Sighed,He let his head collapse on his desk. So fun, today would be.

"Why don't we start with the new girl. Luciana..."

At the sound of this name, his head jerked up. He didn't recognize that name. Maybe it was...

"...Would you please come up and announce to the class what your kinetic abilities are, and give us a demonstration? Remember, if you see your abilities as dangerous, or are afraid you may lose control, you can use the aerogel containment center to the left of the board. It will allow us to view your actions while providing a safe environment."

He glanced over at the girl, the barest hint of a smile on his face. So he'd get to see her abilities after all.

He looked up at the mention of his name, then groaned at the mention of the next. Kafei Syunser was a Cryokinetic, and the resident in-crowd jackass, who also just happened to have it out for him. Walking to the front of the class, he was elbowed out of the way by Kafei. "Move it."

Nero groaned. This was going to be a treat for sure. He leaned against the board,head down.
Mr. Karamin shuffled his papers and looked expectantly at them.
"Well? Who first?"
Kafei Yawned and stretched.
"Me,Of course."
He cracked his knuckles in a very grating manner, before ice enveloped his arms,and he looked around the room before adopting a smarmy grin and turning to Nero.
"...Think fast."
He hurled a chunk of ice at him,freezing Nero's arm to the board. The rest of the class began to laugh,while Karamin rolled his eyes. "Very funny. Your abilities have progressed, even if your manners have not. Very well. Your turn,Nero."
He didn't hear any of this. Dark, seething anger was boiling up in him,and with no warning,the entirety of his arm that was covered in frost burst into black flames, thawing his arm from it's bind. His arm was now covered in dark fire from shoulder to fingertips, and as red electricity arced down the surface of the flames to his clenched fist where it crackled around his knuckles,he turned to Kafei and threw a fist directly at him...




...Which impacted onto the side of the aerogel chamber beside him,completely shattering it,a shockwave of energy blowing through the room, the lights dimming and brightening before shorting and blowing out, while causing most of the student's hair to stand on end. He withdrew his fist,letting the flames as well as the electricity dissipate as the class sat there in silence, including Kafei, who tried to keep his cool. Only Mr. Karamin spoke in a slightly unimpressed voice.
"Too much raw energy, Nero. And you almost pulverized Kafei. You're got potential,but you're not working with it. Sit down."
He walked back to his seat,burying his face in the book. As if he needed to make a bigger spectacle of himself.

He spent the rest of the class staring blankly at the front of the room, watching as everyone from Geokinetics to Chronokinetics came up and demonstrated their abilities. 30 minutes dragged by before the bell finally rung, and Mr. Karamin looked up with an exasperated look. "Well, Shoot. We didn't get everyone. All right, class, we'll pick this up again tomorrow. Dismissed."

The entire class stampeded out of the room in a few moments,while he took his time, gathering his things and slinging his backpack over his shoulder before exiting the room. The entirety of that particular class left him decidedly weary, and he walked down the hall to the water fountain, leaning over and taking a long drink, standing up only when he heard a voice behind him.

"That was some low shit you pulled earlier, Atsumori."

He turned, already knowing what he'd see. Kafei was standing behind him,sleeves of his nylon track-jacket rolled up,arms enveloped in ice. To his left were a couple of his friends, a shapeshifter named Jace Hayle and someone he'd never seen before who's eyes were flaring a bright red, small little flashes of orange light emitting from them every couple of seconds. He could only assume that that one could emit irradiated energy from his eyes, or microwaves, judging by the way the air was distorting in a haze in front of his face. He sighed and rolled his sleeves up as well.
"I give what's deserved. Do you need something, or are you just going to stand there looking like a half-thawed neanderthal?"
Kafei bared his teeth and took a step forward.

Nero noticed the surrounding tempertature getting considerably colder, and suddenly felt extreme fatigue followed by what felt like the biggest headache he'd ever had. He felt like his thoughts were scrambling,and with sudden and extreme clarity, he slung his bag off of his shoulder and hurled it at the unnamed adversary to the left of Kafei,who seemed to be concentrating deeply. As soon as the bag impacted with his face, he stumbled back, and the pressure in Nero's head cleared. The guy had been sending microwave pulses into his head to try and distort his thoughts and potentially send him into unconciousness. With no hesitation, he extended an arm,palm out, and sent a stream of red lightning flying at him. It slammed square into the center of his chest just as he was recovering from the blow of the projectile backpack, and sent him flying back into the lockers, where he slumped into unconciousness, his shirt charred. Nero winced. Maybe a little TOO much power on that one.

Kafei, not even bothering to acknowledge the plight of his friend, charged at Nero, one arm outraised. He had expected this type of recklessness, and slid to the side moments before his fist would have impacted with his face, placing an iron grip on his shoulder and a hand on his lower back,shoving him into a row of lockers. He then reached up and slammed his face into the metal, turning him around and delivering two swift punches to his gut, bowling him over, before taking him by the back of the neck and lifting his head up, drawing his arm back and throwing an electrically charged haymaker into the center of his already-bloodied face, the result of the blow sending him sprawling off his feet and onto the floor. Glancing over at jace, who looked like he was checking the unnamed guy's vitals, Nero strode over, picked up his backpack, and made his way down the hall to his next class, wearing a smile of satisfaction. Sometimes, People just deserved it.

He traveled down the hallway, feeling far more satisfied with himself than he should've. But Kafei had been out for him for quite some while, and this would ensure it would stop, or at least give him a break. He reached into the pocket of his jacket, his hand manipulating the concealed iPod. Not bothering to raise the headphones around his neck to his ears, he kept walking as the opening strains of Like Callisto To A Star In Heaven erupted quite violently from the speakers, despite their small size.

He took a breath and tried to remember what class he had next. He still felt slightly detached from his run-in with the one who's name he still didn't know. He continued walking,eyes closed, and was on the verge of remembrance when he tripped,crashing to the ground, his face meeting the imitation-marble floor with a solid crack. He stood rather unsteadily, feeling warmth on his face. He reached up, touching the space between his mouth and nose, his hand red with blood when he withdrew it. He sighed, then remembered that he had tripped over something. He glanced down and saw the girl from earlier. All thoughts of pain gone, he kneeled down, face-level with her. "Hey.. Are you alright?"

He helped her to her feet, then brushed off his jacket. "Yeah. I'm alright." He pinched the bridge of his nose,heating his fingers slightly, The heat congealing the blood rather quickly and staunching the flow of blood. Pulling a piece of notebook paper from his bag and crumpling it, he used it as a makeshift tissue, wincing when he touched his nose. It'd be sore for a while, though not for long. He'd always healed unusually quickly from minor stuff like this. He managed an apologetic half-grin. "Sorry for falling on you. I shouldn't close my eyes when I walk." He then noticed her hand was still on his shoulder. He reddened slightly, then it was gone as quickly as it came. "Uh... Your name is Luciana, right? I'm sorry, again."

He blinked, then gave her a smile, attempting to erase from it the cynical line that highschool and life in general had added. Wiping his nose with the cloth, he folded it into a small square and awkwardly gave it back to her. "Eh... Thanks." Something in his head clicked, and he glanced down at her. "Hey, what class do you have next? I saw your kinetic ability and it would make sense that you have, maybe... Combat Readiness?"

He shrugged slightly. "I don't really need it either, seeing as I know how to fight already. My uncle chose to teach me Muay Thai. But it beats any of the other choices they gave us." The bell rang as soon as he'd finished talking. "Shit. Class has already started, and we're still on the other end of the school. C'mon." Without stopping to consider his actions, he took her by the hand, slinging her up onto his back, and stood motionless for a moment, before the lockers clattered and the ground shook as they both dissapeared. He dashed past students and teachers alike, though they were able to be seen as a multicolored blur, seeing as he had to run at considerably slowed speeds. Reaching the classroom in less than a minute, he stopped outside the door, his shoes making a loud squeaking as he braked. Letting her down off his back, he scratched his head, hoping she wasn't too rattled from the ride.
